Swimming season is about to begin, which means you’re probably thinking about all the ways you can be quicker, stronger and better. Another thing our dentist, Dr. Neelima Chiru, encourages you to think about is caring for the smile. If you’re not careful, your teeth and gums can suffer the consequences of swimming. So, to keep your smile in tip-top shape, our dentist encourages you to avoid swimming behaviors that affect the oral health. Those are:
-Drinking sports drinks: Sports drinks contain a lot of sugar, which means they can promote tooth decay when you drink them. Tooth decay is very dangerous for the smile, and it’s best to keep it at bay. So, drink water instead of sports drinks.
-Not protecting your teeth from the chlorine: Chlorine can affect your teeth by causing sensitivity, tooth stains and tooth transparency. You can protect your teeth from chlorine by keeping your mouth closed under water and by scheduling a checkup with a fluoride treatment early in your season.
-Not keeping up on oral hygiene: Swim practices and meets can be tiring, but you should never be too tired to clean and care for your teeth and gums. So, make sure to brush twice daily, floss daily and rinse daily.
